THE BIG PICTURE

[Season 2]

[close encounter]
'I don't have the X-Files, Scully, but I still have my work, and I have you, and I have myself.' --Mulder. Little Green Men

Little Green Men is the most satisfying season premiere so far. Scully is teaching, back at Quantico, and Mulder is stuck doing electronic surveillance. Senator Matheson, Mulder's ally in Congress, summons Mulder and sends him to Arecibo, to make "contact." Scully goes after him. They return without the evidence they need, but the experience renews Mulder's quest and his partnership with Scully. Skinner finally stands up to Cancer Man and kicks him out of his office.

"The Son": Don't you want to live forever?
Mulder: Not if drawstring pants come back into style.

3
In Sleepless, Mulder is assigned a partner, Ratboy. I mean, Krycek. Mulder is wisely suspicious of him, as we soon learn that Ratboy work for Cancer Man--or so we are led to believe, until 4th season's Terma.

Duane Barry is an ex-FBI agent who believes he has been abducted by aliens. When Mulder captures Duane, they find an implant they can't identify. Duane escapes and kidnaps Scully, to offer her to the "aliens." Mulder captures Duane Barry in Ascension, but he doesn't find Scully.

[Scully in a coma]
'I have more respect for you, Mulder. You're becoming a player.'
--Cancer Man. One Breath

In One Breath, Scully suddenly appears in a hospital, in a coma. Skinner leads Mulder to Cancer Man, where he [Mulder] confronts him with a gun to his face. Despite Mulder's objections, Scully is taken off life support (as she had requested in her living will), and in the end she awakens from the coma. Skinner reopens the X-Files.

[Skinner and X]
In Colony, Samantha seems to be back, but turns out to be an alien hybrid looking for protection from the bounty hunter. Mulder's parents appear for the first time.

X and Skinner have a memorable close encounter in End Game.

Humbug was Darin Morgan's first episode, and added a new dimension to the show. Mulder's kind of humor had always been a fundamental part of the XF, but Humbug took it even further, and made episodes like Jose Chung possible.

'Watch your back. This is just the beginning.' --Skinner. F. Emasculata
'You're choosing a dangerous time to go it alone, Agent Mulder.' --X. Soft Light

[Alien?]
'They will be coming.' --Albert

'In the desert, things find a way to survive. Secrets are like this, too. They push their way up through the sands of deception so men can know them.' --Albert

'Nothing disappears without a trace.' --Albert

Anasazi

The second season ends with another bang. In Anasazi, a computer hacker breaks into the DOD's computers, and copies sensitive files that supposedly expose the government's cover-up of the evidence of extraterrestrials, their experiments on humans, and more. The hacker ("The Thinker") records the information on a digital tape which he gives to Mulder, who is then chased by Cancer Man and his associates.

Cancer Man visits Bill Mulder, revealing they had worked together for the Defense Department. Bill Mulder and Scully are named in the encrypted files, but the context is not clear. Krycek kills Bill Mulder, and Fox is presumed dead in the Arizona desert.

Proceed to Season 3.
