I first saw Contact in 2001. Since then, I must have seen it 30 times. I never get bored of it. I like many film genres, including Thriller, Action, Horror, Musicals, Comedy, etc. However, I cannot understand how some people say that Contact is a rubbish film. It is amazing. It still looks great now. The script is superb, especially the dialogue between Jodie Foster and John Hurt throughout the film. There are so many pieces that fit together brilliantly in the film, such as the compass "Might save you life one day" and the quadruple star system. The opening scene is amazing and well, the idea of the machine and how it works and looks is so damn brilliant. It is my favourite film of all time. Watching it again from time to time continues to be my wish.

Nothing too much wrong with the movie aside from some of the rotten characters...(ie the glory-takers and the sceptics) Having missed it much earlier, have picked up the bluray and with projector..looks great to me. Sound also pretty good. Given some comments here I can see that three times is not enough, as I have missed some points of significance. I think it is one of those films. Maybe the book would help.
Nice to note that dear old Weta Digital from my home base created the wormholes. To quote Ellie..."Ï had no idea..I had no idea"

I just wanted to express my deep love for the story of Contact. I remember seeing the movie in the theater back in 1996 and I think I watched it again in the theater 2 more times lol. I remember initially feeling a bit angry as a Christian...I felt that the story portrayed Christians as freaks that are delusional. However, after about ten fifteen years I finally read the book and gained a better understanding of Carl Sagan and Ann Drunyans visiin...and I now hold this story to be my favorite of all-time. The story so cleverly begins with Christians looking crazy for their faith, yet, by the end of the story, it's the other way around and it's just mind boggling how Sgan and Drunyan figured out how to throw such a 180 LOL! I can literally watch the movie every day...thats how much I love this story. I'm also in the process of re-reading the book again and this time I am taking notes, yes notes lol. For those who have not read the book yet, please by all means do so, it is so much more in depth and you can really feel the entire worlds efforts more so during the reading than in the movie. I suggest taking notes though as there are many more characters to reference.. Also, keep a dictionary nearby because the vocabulary is quite intelligent if you ask me. Let me again just express my deepest love for this story and, though I do not believe that God has created any other intelligent life anywhere else except for Earth FOR NOW, I do believe that God will keep creating it elsewhere in the universe in the years to come once the Earth (society) is once again how He originally proposed it to be. In the book of Revelation it says that there wull be new scrolls to be opened and I pray that will include the finding of new lifeforms on other planets. What a humbling and awe-inspiring moment that would be!

This is one for Cinbear! Having watched the film on BluRay, the audio is perhaps a bit more optimal. Elli does say "Poettry . . . they should have sent a poet!" and not "Bolishvie ..." She simply slurs its pronunciation in light of her epiphany.

Just noticed the comment by Tomas, regarding the number system. A prime number is valid what ever number system is used. They could by Binars using Binary but the number of pulses would still be the same which make up the primes, it was only the VLA computer system which was displayng the tally in decimal.

This film is close to my heart. I have a great respect for Carl Sagan, and even though I've not read the book, I feel the film has been well executed, I'm sure Carl would have agreed. I've just watched the Blu Ray version, and this is much better than the DVD, although the audio is only AC3 rather than DTS HD, it doesn't lose much because of it. Where the Blu Ray counts is the travel scenes to Vaga where you capture the full visual spectical of her journey. Its a film which calls to close inspection our entire belief system, whether you're a scientist or otherwise, not suggesting though that all scientists are godless. As an engineer I too look for empiricle proof of the existance of god, but feel we don't yet know all the facts to say for sure one way or another that there isn't.
Anyway, it's a great shame Carl never managed to write a sequal, but I'm hopeful that someone will pick up that mantel as this has plenty of scope to go for a great sequal.

I wonder about something. One of the important issues of the film concerns identifying sequences of prime numbers as though that would be a universal constant. What if the aliens were using a different number scheme...say base 8 instead of base 10?

i love this movie! i forget who mentioned this earlier in the blog but i too am interested in the line "you have your mothers hands" -vagan father. as the previous blogger mentioned, the vagans only know what Dr. E knows (as they took her thoughts and memories) so how could they know anything about the doctors mother? i have 3 proposals. first and least interesting of them is that perhaps eleanor had a memory of her father saying this and the vagan was simply repeating this comment. second, perhaps this is hinting that there is a higher power and this is eleanors way of realizing what palmer realized when he found god. finally, maybe this has some philosophical meaning such as this has happened before and is not as the vagan says, "the first step" or that the vagans want to convey to eleanor that there is more to learn and she does not quite understand everything yet. what do you guys think. as a final thought i lke how this movie comes to a happy ending of sorts when the viewer understands that eleanor knows what happened was not a hallucination when she receives the new grants to build 40 more dishes at the very large array. (sorry this was a bit badly phrased but its late so im tired)

I love this movie . . . very thought-provoking! However, in the Celestial Event scene, Elli says "Bolishvie . . . they should have sent a poet!" and the subtitle says "Poettry . . . they should have sent a poet!" I'm not sure that I've spelled Bolishvie correctly, but does anyone know of a poet with a similar name? I'm really tired of incorrect subtitle references like this!

If a sequel was announced tomorrow, everybody would say how much sense it makes. The subject, are we alone, is timeless. Lets face it, the world knows that the machine exists and awaits a sequel in that harbor in Japan. So, in the world of movies, the machine is something akin to the flying saucers that crashed(?) in Roswell. The truth is being kept from us, and it has. What was it, 18 hours of static on Arroway's video recorder?

According to the book, what Ellie sees after she says, "they're alive" is the relay station that received the Tv signal from earth and then sent back the message.

I have a nagging question about one seen in the movie. When Elli is traveling through the worm hole and at one of sudden stops, I believe it is the one that she says “they’re alive”, she suddenly looks up and there appears to be an object there and then she is darted away. Is that supposed to be an alien ship? I freeze framed it and cannot get a clue on what it is.

That is a bit of a stretch, Lix. I am beginning to think that the rings and popcorn/sand patterns were just little artistic flourishes that mean something only to the person who made them. Has anyone read the book? I haven't. I wonder if these things appear in the book.

I just rewatched this movie, and what a movie it (still) is! My thoughts from the original post question is that the aliens may have killed the father and forced the popcorn he was bringing up to land in the pattern that would reveal their stellar coordinates to the main character. Because they (aliens) did not realize how emotional humans can be during the loss of a loved one, they decided to send a digital signal instead of repeating their first mistake...it's a long shot I know... Any other thoughts?

Eli and her father are wearing the same ring just because it the same one ring that Eli's father "left for her" after he passed away...
About the ring that Kent (the blind guy) is wearing, is just alike...

Does anyone have an idea as to the significance of the matching rings worn by Ellie and her father? I think the blind astronomer (sorry, I forgot his name)also has one. Also, there was a pattern made by the spilled popcorn when Ellie's dad died which was repeated in her dad (alien) sifts sand through his fingers on the beach. Any ideas?

Ellie: You know, there are 400 billion stars out there, just in our galaxy alone. If only one out of a million of those had planets, all right, and if just one out of a million of those had life, and if just one out of a million of those had intelligent life, there would be literally millions of civilizations out there.
Palmer: Well, if there wasn't, it would be an awful waste of space.
Is it just me or does this math NOT add up
1 in a million of 400 Billion is 400,000 (planets)..."if just one million of those had life (well now we are down to less than one....) so I guess I don't get it in the context of "our Galaxy"...maybe of the script was written differently...anyway...Loved the movie...have always been bothered by that quote...

Only in the fact that the machine opened "a fourth dimension" in real-time-space-time reality. It opened a worm-hole, fully explained by Einstein through a document which, I believe is called, "The Einstein-Rosen Bridge Theory", taught in physics class during high school, for me, at least....Look up the fascinating observations of wormholes through Wikipedia, and/or read some of Einstein's papers. All of it, quite easily accessible on this here gadget that we call "The Internet."

Unfortunately, Blu-Ray makes the effects look much worse. They looked good on the standard DVD, but here you can really see how transparent (and fake) they are. I can't complain about any of the rest of it, though. The picture has definitely gotten a lot sharper.

I'm rather disappointed with the Blu-ray transfer. It probably looks better than the DVD (I haven't compared them side by side yet), but compared to other high definition discs, this one leaves much to be desired. I wouldn't hurry to show this disc to anyone.
Even the original Star Trek looks much, much better in high definition, and the source is much, much older.

Yes. What was the significance of this little pattern. The bass vio's swell during it's appearance too. So the movie makers we're doing something. Maybe it's a hook to connect us with a planned sequel. It' s also shaped like a dish with the detector at the vertex.

I have always wondered about a line in the movie. "you have your mothers hands". Anyone else wonder why this line was in the movie? It was not in the book. The strange thing about it is this: Elli's mom died in childbirth so Elli never met her. How then did the "vagans" 'pull it out of her mind'?
This has bugged me from the very first time I saw the movie years ago. If any of you know a place where I can find some info, or discution on this subject I would be eternaly greatfull. Darla

CONTACT II
The 17 hours of static , was not static its more blue prints . primary number some how
come in to play to help to decode the message, as its the only way to pack information this densely
.
Dr arroway did fall straight threw the core and was partly right
she did imagine it .She didn't go anywhere. here consciousness did
not her physical body . So the aliens made a determination base on
her life experience and thoughts that we wear ready for the next step
the question is are we?"small moves small moves - well for us this is
going to be a huge move of faith ,trust something?
the second message questions whether we have the resources and skills to
build the REAL TRANSPORT all nations and people must commit and
sacrifice a great deal in order to build what seems to be beyond are ability
and useable recourses . but the payoff could be beyond imagination.
some call this massive undertaking our evolutionary destany.whal others
questions the motives of the massagers .its on the edge of what's possible
for humanity as a whole . provided we can unite for this porpous, we are
at our peak with our technology and this will take us to the next level literally.
just as one culture teaches another so they will teach us But can we do it?
this is the simplified premiums
the MACHINE that transports matter ie people is a massive torrid 10 Miles in diameter
thousands of feet thick ,superconducting in nature and uses 30 nuclear reactor
spaced around the RING and when idling causes storm formation from the
massive amount of ocean water evaporate around the rectors cooling tower
its really BIG and when tested creates its own
aurora Borealis as city around the world dim from the massive drain .
even from space station it obvious that it doing some bizarre to the atmosphere
and the city dim to power hungry monster warming up .seats 4 gets 10 light years to the gigawatt
. WANA TAKE A RIDE ?
the builders of the gate ways from billions of years have returned and contact may not
be possible due to the fact the universe is expanding at a geometric rate so time is of essence
the message suggest they are curious about us our minds - emotions -dreams ...
but we have to make the next move soon.our we are trapped hear on earth ,since they
understand how to traverse space or rather guide throes threw it with out loses.we are dependent
upon them for galactic travel .But that will change. Yes we have wings ,but they will teach us to fly.
Just A thought
Thank for the Read

I think the main idea of this movie is really interesting.
Notice it was made in 1997 or so and at the moment 2009 a lot have passed, we have more knowledge about the Universe and some particular subjects. Would be nice if a second movie could be made with the recent knowledge we possess to build a new movie. People have the right to know who the Human technology advance towards this matter.
BlackHoles, WhiteHoles, WormHoles, speed of light and particle accelerators are very interesting thing these days.

some say that to love others u must first love yourself, well, then to expect to see aliens leads me to think that we must first observe how we treat our own people on earth such as immigrants. we actually pay agents to patrol borders to keep people out of countries; yet we expect to see space aliens? and how would china or some rebel country feel if the US did see space aliens and receive technology? would the USA want other countries have the same? would we worry? IN CONCLUSION, how can a world power nation deter space people from helping other nations, well, aliens will not come to a planet of war such as earth, which is why war exists.

the writer chose a storyline based on a search for life outside of earth. i think the writers' underlying meaning is how to cope with being Lonely, or longing for something. the alien explains this to jodie foster while they are at the beach during her experience. its more about human psychology than it is about finding life on another planet, and we can choose any infinite way to portray it thru screenplay.

What a movie, the question we should ask is, not IF another life force will contact us but WHEN? In an age where every year we advance more in technology surely it’s only within a whisper that either we or someone else will say "HELLO", however that maybe. Would we truly be prepared for this? We are nothing but an enigma. Parts of earth fight whether relatively, historically, politically or religiously but neigh primitively over things which if we are truly advanced as our science would suggest we would draw a line under. We cannot see beyond the main focal points, we over populate, rape, ravage and pillage the earth in all forms. If Mr Sagan can create such disputed fiction to inflame the minds senses then why cant we cherry pick and elaborate on such issues at hand?

What an amazing movie. Seen it at the movies when it came out in 97 and its still as great now as then. Would love to see a sequal. There have not been that many great sci-fi movies since its release and with the amount of sci-fi remakes flopping this would surely be a worthwhile project. An amazing cast but individually have not done anything great since contact, surley this would boost their career? Any ideas on what the plot would be? please leave ideas as you never know who might be reading this site!

Hello,
I am putting this out there to anyone who may have noticed a reacuring pattern throughout the film. When Dr A lost her father the popcorn on the floor was spilled in a pattern. The sky on the alien world contained the same pattern of stars and the scene where she looks at the sand in her hand is the same. The constellation of corona borealis or nothern crown fits this shape. Check it out. Was this a hint to where a real signal might have been? Was Carl trying to tell us something?
